Template vs custom website: which does your business need?

Template or custom? A plain comparison for Malaysian businesses, and who each one suits.

Good question!

Short answer: a template website suits most small businesses that need a clear, professional site quickly. A custom website makes sense when your offer, brand or customer journey is different enough that a template would hold you back.

When business owners in Malaysia ask us for a website, one of the first decisions is whether to start from a template or build something custom. Neither is "better". They solve different problems. Here's how to choose.

What's the difference?

A template website starts from a ready-made layout. The structure already exists; we fit your logo, colours, text and photos into it and adjust sections to suit your business.

A custom website is designed from a blank page around your goals: the layout, the journey, the features and the look are all made for you.

A template is usually right if…

  • You need a clear, trustworthy site soon, for example to send people to from ads or Instagram.
  • Your customers mostly need the basics: what you do, prices or packages, location, reviews, how to contact you.
  • You have 4 to 5 core pages, such as Home, About, Services, Work and Contact.
  • You'd rather invest more in content and ads than in the site itself.

Custom is usually right if…

  • Your brand is a big part of why people buy, so looking like everyone else costs you sales.
  • Your customer journey is unusual: online ordering, bookings, dealer pricing, calculators, multiple locations.
  • You're replacing an old site that people already know, and you want it to feel clearly new.
  • You plan to grow the site a lot over time.

Costs people forget either way

  • Hosting and domain: usually billed separately from the website work, every year.
  • Content: good photos and clear copy matter more than the template. A beautiful layout with weak photos still feels weak.
  • Maintenance: updates, security and backups keep the site safe and fast after launch.

Questions to ask before you decide

  1. What should a visitor do on the site: call, WhatsApp, book, buy?
  2. Which pages do you really need on day one?
  3. Do you have photos and text ready, or does that need to be created?
  4. Is your brand the main reason people choose you?
  5. Will you need features later, like booking or a shop?

How we approach it

We design every site around one question: what should a visitor do next? Sometimes that's a template that launches fast and brings enquiries from day one. Sometimes it's a custom build that sets a brand apart. You can see both in our website projects, and more about how we work on our website design page.
